Local Mental Health Agency Receives Funding to Help Vulnerable People Impacted by the Pandemic

Mental Health Recovery Partners Society, Central Vancouver Island (MHRP-CI) has been granted funding through the Government of Canada and United Way Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF) to help two vulnerable Mental Health populations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The MHRP-CI is pleased to be announce that the funding will provide four free sessions of professional counselling services to family caregivers, of those living with mental illness, whose own mental health has been affected as a result of COVID-19 and to individuals already living with mental illness whose mental health has been exacerbated by COVID-19. It has been difficult for most people in our community dealing with the pandemic but especially the vulnerable who have mental illness and their families said Kristie Sutton, President of MHRP-CI. This opportunity offers them access to much needed counselling.

We are grateful to the United Way of Central & Northern Vancouver Island (UWCNVI) for their support of our project. The UWCNVI has invested $1.29M to 64 local organizations from the Malahat to Port Hardy to help local community programs and services in support of their most vulnerable people impacted by the pandemic.

MHRP-CI is a non-profit charitable organization who provides education and support for those with mental illness and their families. We provide an intensive 8 week free family education program to family members of individuals living with any mental illness taught by caring trained family members who have been there. We also provide family support group meetings currently via Zoom during the pandemic. Meetings are held twice a month year round and provide a supportive environment for families impacted by mental illness to share their stories and ways of coping.
